THE GRAPHIC NOVEL

Written by Richard Van Camp, illustrated by Krystal Mateus, and published by the South Slave Divisional Education Council, Three Feathers is a graphic novel published in Chipewyan, Slavey, Cree, and English.

The story follows the life journey of three young Indigenous men, Flinch, Bryce and Rupert, who are sent to live nine months on the land as part of a sentencing circle process following a string of robberies and the grave injury they cause a respected Elder.

As the young men learn to live on the land, guided by two Dene Elders, they learn to take responsibility for their actions and acquire the values that have been lacking in their lives – humility, caring and respect. But will they be forgiven for what they have done?

This story goes on to explore the power and grace of restorative justice and the cultural legacy that can empower future generations.
